Child's Play Magazine Writes:
We've recently discovered a little gem of a book , entitled The
Dancing Puppet Theatre. Written by Toronto artist and puppeteer
Doreen D'Eath, the book is about using the art of puppetry as
a vehicle for accompanying children on a creative journey.
Throughout, the reader is guided to use imagination and creativity
to execute both the projects presented and to solve problems in
other areas of life. through a mixture of children's drawings
and technical illustrations, the book delivers just the right
mix of inspiration and how-to that can turn ordinary materials
into extraordinary theatrical experiences. in addition to the
strong dose of philosophy, the book presents a variety of inventive
ideas and directions for making puppets-ideas that will be useful
to parents and teachers who have never thought of themselves as
"crafty" or creative.
The emphasis is on helping adults provide technical support and
guidance rather than the type of all-encompassing "help"
that ends up sewing marvelous costumes and building wonderful
sets, while the child watches. Writes D'Eath, "The greatest
gift we can give to children is the time and patience to allow
them to explore and create."
D'Eath has written and published The Dancing Puppet Theatre herself
from years of experience performing, creating and working with
children and adults to create puppet theatre. She has studied
theatre, mime and dance, and worked as a printmaker and painter.
